Motorola Solutions announced remote access to its Project 25 P25 ASTRO network management platform, allowing users to access network data anywhere and from any device.
The upgrade also includes expanded performance and other metrics, along with enhanced security for users of the CirrusCentral system. After receiving input from 27 different users, the company deployed the updated system at five beta sites. The subscription-based service now offers customizable notifications to system managers if there are problems or if something changes within a network.
Users can monitor their networks from their smartphones and quickly see any changes. The system tracks each site on a network and provides status bars for load. The system also tracks load over time with user-friendly graphics. The product unlocks more capability and flexibility in staffing and responsiveness. The capabilities includes alarm aggregation and how data is presented to users, along with network processing.

Coverage is the area over which people need to communicate, and capacity is the number of simultaneous calls the system can handle. The services that the network will support, such as voice, data, encryption, etc. P25 networks can be designed to meet a wide range of requirements, and are able to scale so easily due to the defined interface points between subsystems, allowing for many optional features.
The way each manufacturer engineers their subsystem may be different, but they can still all work together. This is because P25 has defined interfaces between the specific paths of the system. This allows radio equipment from different manufacturers to work together. These standards define the messaging between portable and mobile radios in the field and the network equipment. This allows for different vendors of radio equipment to work together on the same network.
A range of console equipment is available, and can interface to the P25 radio system. P25 conventional non-trunked radio interfaces to consoles using the digital fixed station interface, while, on trunked radio networks, the interface is called the console subsystem interface, or CSSI. The P25 standard also defines how many advanced features such as encryption, IP data, location services, and many others can be added to the radio network.
The features are optional, and this provides the ability to reduce the cost by only labeling the features required on a particular network. P25 can provide short range radio-to-radio communication for a small team, such as fire, ground, special event, or tactical teams. Radio-to-radio calls use the CAI, and no network infrastructure is required. Features such as encryption and data messaging are still supported. Agencies are still able to use their own P25 radios, and to increase capacity, different channels could be used for different teams.
To extend coverage, a P25 repeater could be used. A number of companies provide P25 portable repeaters. These can be quickly set up where greater coverage is needed. All permanent repeater equipment could be installed on a hilltop or a high building with an antenna system designed to provide coverage over a specific area.
P25 repeaters use the same CAI as mobiles and portables, meaning repeaters from one manufacturer can work with portables and mobiles from another manufacturer. Again, to increase capacity, multiple repeaters could be used, one for each group. Repeaters are installed at various locations, and network together using standard IP linking. This allows calls received at one repeater, by the CAI, to be rebroadcast from multiple repeaters. Portables and mobiles can be programmed to scan and vote automatically and identify the best repeater in any location.
This network of repeaters can also connect to a dispatch console, using the same DFSI. Where necessary, capacity can be increased by installing more than one network of repeaters.
Where a large number of different teams operate in the same area, trunking can be used to share the same pool of available channels. A console system can connect to the trunking system, using the CSSI.
Capacity can be increased by adding additional channels to the trunked system, and coverage can be increased by adding sites. Large statewide networks can be created, and many agencies can share the same network, and, therefore, the costs.
An individual agency may purchase only the subscriber units, or the mobiles and portables, and then pay a fee to access the radio network. In summary, the exact needs of each network or system are likely to be different.
Some agencies may use a mix of their own conventional channels and statewide trunked to talk groups.Communications are the backbone of every mission. Project 25 defines system interfaces that are utilized to build P25 communications networks. TIA Standards documents define the messages and procedures required for P25 features to operate across the P25 system interfaces. Project 25 does not define equipment, just the messages and procedures across the P25 Interfaces. Talk group numbers have a 16bit number. In hexadecimal, that is from 0 to FFFF and contains 65, group addresses.
The address FFFF is a special address that means an all-call to all units in the system. Trunk systems also allow announcement groups to be defined. This is a group of other groups. In addition to this all-call address to everybody on the network, trunk systems allow announcement groups to be defined. An announcement group is a group made up of a number of smaller groups.
So one call could be made as an announcement to multiple teams. Unlike some other radio standards, the P25 unit and group number ranges are independent. You can have both a Unit one and a Group one. It is possible for more than one organization to install a P25 trunk system in the same area.
Each system could have many sites that would still be a unique radio frequency sub-systems RFFS. An individual radio or subscriber unit may or may not be permitted to roam from one RFSS to another. Therefore, it is important that the radio can identify what system a particular site belongs to. To allow this to occur, each site has a control channel that is constantly broadcasting messages that identify both the site and the system that site belongs to.
There is then a system identity or a 12bit number that can identify over 4, systems per wide area communication network. This is an 8bit number from 1 to and the individual site address which is also an 8bit number.
The broadcasting of these system and network IDs allow a radio to roam around the network and always identify the best site from which to make calls.
P25 and Public Safety Two-Way Radios
It also allows the system administrator to restrict units or groups to coverage from specific sites. This can be very important when planning capacity for the network and how many channels will be needed in which area.
A NAC Code is used in both trunked and conventional radio systems. This is programmed into both the mobile and portable radios and into the repeater, and can be used as a means of selectively accessing the base station infrastructure, providing a function very much like subaudible tones used in analog systems.
This can be important when there are a limited number of frequencies available and the same radio frequencies are reused at two sites. In a Network design, this is acceptable, providing there is enough separation between the sites that the coverage does not overlap. However, because of terrain variation and the fact that mobile and portable radios move around.
